Geologists use the term " marble" to refer to metamorphosed limestone; however stonemasons use the term more broadly to encompas unmetamorphosed limestone. Marble is commonly used for sculpture and as a building material.

It has a characteristic waxy look which when sculpting the human body gives it a real feel of life. As marble was the favourite medium for Greek and Roman sculptors and architects marble has become a cultural symbol of tradition and refined taste. It also has a wide range of industrial uses such as components in paper, toothpaste, plastics and paints.
