Limestone and lime by-products are among the oldest building materials known to man, having been used for centuries in the making of concrete, glass and iron, and even the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt. The fact that the Pyramid still stands completely intact is a testament to the hardwearing qualities of limestone, that make it the ideal material for floor tiles that will last a lifetime.

Classified as a ‘sedimentary rock’, limestone is composed mainly of calcite and is formed predominantly in clear, warm, shallow marine waters. It’s very common to find fossils inside the rock, but what attracts many people to StoneTrader limestone tiles is their varied surface markings and light natural colour that complements virtually any colour scheme in the home.

Worth the Weight

Limestone tiles also have a characteristically smooth surface, giving them an advantage over travertine tiles which have surface holes that need to be filled. However limestone rock is still very porous, making it susceptible to water damage – it’s therefore imperative that you seal your StoneTrader limestone tiles and leave them to completely dry before exposing them to wet conditions.

Be prepared also for the weight of limestone tiles, which is a great asset for their use as a floor covering but also one that can make the tiles tough to install! Nevertheless, once fitted your limestone tiles will require minimum maintenance as they can be swept clean, mopped with a mild detergent and enjoyed for many decades to come.

Although our vibrantly coloured glass mosaic tiles are a popular choice among StoneTrader customers, we have a far wider choice than just blue, red and purple. Our neutral coloured mosaic tiles allow you to bring tasteful texture into your bathroom, in subtle shades that speak for themselves.

If you’re a firm believer that less is more, you’ll love StoneTrader’s Vanilla Cream Tumbled Marble tiles, with a mosaic of natural light hues that complement any bathroom décor – which is why it’s one of the most popular purchases in the entire StoneTrader tiles range.

Create a Buzz in the Bathroom

A more dramatic mosaic tile effect can be achieved with Split Face Mosaic tiles, available in a choice of Black Slate and Multi Colour Slate to create a talking point in your bathroom. Shaped in long strips, rather than squares, they bring an added interest to mosaic tiles and will especially make an impact when used to decorate a single wall.

For mosaic tiles with that little something extra, the Venetian Polished Marble Mosaic tiles could be just the ticket. Each tile comprises of 36 small square marble tiles in shades of cream and dark beige, quarried from the Ayton region of Turkey and attached by hand to make each one really special.

To bring a touch of sparkle to your bathroom, or for a kitchen floor that is sure to create an impact, Starlight Quartz tiles from StoneTrader are the ideal choice. Available in elegant black or crisp white with a high gloss finish, there’s a Starlight Quartz tile for every colour scheme, but there’s more to these tiles than meets the eye.

Starlight Quartz tiles are comprised of 94% crushed quartz, set into a resin with tiny pieces of glittering glass which results in a subtly shimmering finish. The large proportion of quartz in these luxurious engineered stone tiles makes them extremely hardwearing and scratch-resistant, and suitable for use as either a floor or wall covering that you can enjoy for many years to come.

Minimum Effort, Maximum Impact

One great benefit of choosing Starlight Quartz is that they arrive ready to fit, with no sealing required – but beware, these tiles are dense and heavy so if you’re fitting them yourself, you’ll need some assistance.

However, once StoneTrader Starlight Quartz tiles are fitted they require a minimum amount of maintenance, as the impervious, wipe-clean surface safeguards the tiles against stains or damage from water. It’s worth investing in some specialist floor cleaner for your Starlight Quartz tiles though, as the cleaner and better polished they are, the more glamorous they will look.

When tiling a floor or wall in your home, it can really pay off to think outside the box – or indeed, the square. Using coloured tiles to create eye-catching stripes is an easy way to liven up any room, and you can be as striking or subtle as you like.

Striped walls are evocative of European cafes and trendy bars, making them particularly perfect for the kitchen. StoneTrader Porcelain Tiles laid in stripes of black and white will be reminiscent of a sleek Italian coffee shop, whereas lines of red, blue and green would make your kitchen walls look right at home in a quirky Dutch bakery.

Nautical and Nice

Blue and white stripes of tiles may be the natural choice for the bathroom, but for some it can make the room feel too much like a swimming pool. Break up the colours with nautical stripes of red or orange tiles, or use sparkling StoneTrader Glass Mosaic tiles in blue hues for that boutique hotel bathroom look.

Stripes can also work well on floors, particularly in hallways and when the tiles are laid in stripes that run lengthways. This will make the room seem longer and more spacious, and can be dramatic in lines of cream and red, or rustic in stripes of terracotta and brown Limestone.

Decorating a bathroom can be an arduous task so it’s important to choose a décor that won’t soon look dated, and for this reason a monochrome colour scheme is perfect. Black and white bathrooms always look tasteful and striking, and if your bathroom needs an update in a few years’ time all that’s needed is a lick of coloured paint or some vibrant new accessories.

The monochrome look can be lots of fun to achieve, as there are so many possibilities from just two colours. A classic white bathroom suite contrasted with StoneTrader black and white Glass Mosaic Tiles on the walls is a great way to achieve the look, especially with subtly shimmering Starlight Quartz tiles on the floor.

Boutique Chic

Black and white wallpaper with a floral pattern will also bring life to a monochrome bathroom, especially above the sink splashback to create a focal point. Complete the look with crisp white StoneTrader Ceramic floor tiles, fluffy black towels and silver accessories for a feel of boutique hotel luxury.

One of the most chic ways to bring black and white into the bathroom is with cool checkerboard floor tiles – perfect if you’re a fan of retro style. You could even go one step further and choose a black bathroom suite that will definitely become a talking point!

Different types of StoneTrader tiles require different techniques for application, and it’s always important to do your homework first to avoid disappointment later on. Glass tiles can be tricky in particular, so here are a few things to bear in mind before you begin the task.

Get a Grip

Glass tiles are impervious, which means they are impenetrable by mortars. Dry-set mortars will not ‘grip’ the tile surface – only a thin-set mortar with tenacious bond strength will suffice, as these are often fortified with latex and will mean you’re not left with tiles falling off the wall within weeks of installation.

High and Dry

Always use a waterproofing membrane underneath the glass tiles when installing them in bathrooms. The wall you’re applying the glass tiles to will determine the type of membrane required, so if you’re unsure which type to use StoneTrader will be happy to help.

Final Cut

If you need to cut glass tiles to fit them around corners or existing furniture, it’s important that you use a specialist glass cutting tool for this job as regular tile cutters will leave glass tiles shattered or crushed. Glass tiles they must be scored along a straight edge then snapped, and many glass tile cutting tools will have the equipment to do both of these things.

Yellow is often said to be the go-to colour whenever you need a pick-me-up – after all, it’s the colour of warm sunshine, beautiful daffodils, tangy lemons and the famous brick road to Oz. It can be a tough colour to use in the home however, but StoneTrader has a great range of yellow tiles that can bring a zing to any room without being overpowering.

Starting at the floor level, yellow Tumbled Travertine tiles can liven up a living room and make the space seem bigger and brighter. Travertine tiles are also extremely hardwearing, and the muted yellow colour will complement many colour schemes so changing your décor won’t be a problem in the future.

Sunny Yet Subtle

In the kitchen, StoneTrader Noce Travertine Mosaic tiles in yellow and white will bring plenty of cheer to your cooking, particularly when used on the walls as a backsplash behind the sink or cooker. Complement the tiles with matching yellow crockery and towels to create a homely, country cottage feel.

The StoneTrader Travertine Mosaic Tiles would also make a bathroom feel cosier and warmer, and the yellow hues are just subtle enough for a shower area or wet room. Experiment with different sizes of mosaic tiles on different walls for an interesting effect, but don’t forget to waterproof your bathroom properly when fitting the tiles to ensure that they’ll last.

When used correctly, mosaic tiles can make a room look bigger, more vibrant and certainly more inviting. StoneTrader has a fantastic range of mosaic tiles in a broad choice of colours, textures and sizes, but here are four things to bear in mind when choosing your new tiles.

Size Matters

Smaller mosaic tiles can be used effectively to decorate a small space, like a shower area or a single bathroom wall, but may not create as much impact when used for an entire room. In this case, use larger mosaic tiles to keep a good sense of proportion and scale that will make the room feel more spacious.

Buy More Than You Need

Mistakes can happen no matter how careful you are, so always buy a few more tiles than you think you might need to allow for errors in measurement, or accidental breakage.

Know Your Materials

The type of surface you’re tiling will largely dictate the kind of tiles that you buy. StoneTrader Glass Mosaic tiles are more suitable for use on walls, whereas many products in our great range of Travertine and Marble Mosaic tiles will be just fine for floors.

Be Brave

Using StoneTrader mosaic tiles for a sink backsplash, or a feature wall brings a great opportunity to experiment with colours and texture. For example, a pink and red glass mosaic tile backsplash contrasted with neutral tiles on the surrounding walls will look particularly striking, and will certainly incite many compliments from visitors.

In this blog we often talk about using tiles to create a focal point in the room, but in the living room the centre of everyone’s attention is often the fireplace. With a little creative imagination, and some StoneTrader tiles, you can give your fireplace that little something extra without spending a fortune – or having to redecorate the rest of your room too.

If you’re fortunate enough to have an old brick fireplace in your home, it’s likely that the bricks may be stained from its years of use, which may not be to everyone’s taste. An easy way to conceal the bricks is to use some coloured StoneTrader tiles, like the eye-catching hammered glass mosaics, all over the inside of the fireplace to jazz up a tired chimney.

Fireplaces Can Be Fashionable

On the outside of your fireplace you can have some fun too, making use of StoneTrader tiles to create a border around the fireplace opening. Black and white porcelain tiles used alternately to create a checkerboard effect will bring some retro chic to a living room, or if you’re feeling daring you could even use tiles over the whole chimney breast wall.

The floor around your fireplace is also a great place for a tile transformation. You could use subtle yet stylish travertine or limestone tiles, or if you’re planning to completely tile your floor, lay a different colour of tiles immediately around the fireplace for an interesting and unusual effect.
